Our Village,
The presence of Gallo-Romans is evidenced in many places. Archaeological findings clearly show that this territory was populated very early.
The medieval origins of our village are a fact since 1063. Indeed, in that year the place where the village was founded was designated by the term of "canesuspenso", with other words "hanging dog". The mystery of this etymology is still unanswered.
During those times the village was also named « Campo-endut » (in 1124); « Campenduto » (1151) and « Capendut » (1222). Later, notaries wrote in public acts "Capendeu" but more often CAPENDU.
During the 10th century the farmers were often exposed to violent acts. Located on top of a hill, the Capendu estate and its garrison were able to offer protection. As a result the population settled there and have built the village of Capendu in its (still) today’s oval form around the estate. The construction of the village continued until the 17th century. Today the village has 1,500 inhabitants.
